Hale Kōkua, care home placement

Senior care homes on Hawaiʻi Island

Senior care homes on Hawaiʻi Island (Big Island)

Looking for a care home, adult residential care home (ARCH), or assisted living for your mom or dad on the Big Island? Hale Kōkua introduces your family to licensed homes that may fit. After that, the home takes it from there.

Hawaiʻi Island is big. Hilo and Kona are far apart, often a two-hour drive or more.

Where a home sits on the island matters as much as the license. We look at both.

What we help with on Hawaiʻi Island

We introduce families to licensed care homes for a parent or kūpuna. You tell us the care your person needs. We explain which Hawaii license fits and introduce you to homes.

  • Adult residential care homes (ARCH), Type I and Type II
  • Expanded ARCH, for nursing-home level care
  • Assisted living facilities
  • Community care foster family homes, when Medicaid is paying

Searching on Hawaiʻi Island

  • We start with where the family lives and where your person's doctors are. Then we look at homes on that side of the island.
  • If the right license is not on the side you want, we tell you early, so you can decide what matters most.

Four steps

How a search works on Hawaiʻi Island

  1. 1

You tell us about your person

Use the form or email us. Tell us who your person is, the island, and what a normal day needs.

  2. 2

    We look at licensed homes

We explain which Hawaii license fits the care you describe. Diet, wheelchair, memory, money, and where family lives help us narrow the list.

  3. 3

    We introduce you to homes

With your OK, we introduce your family to one or more licensed homes that may fit, and share what you told us.

  4. 4

The home takes it from there

You talk with the home, visit, and decide. The home handles admission and care. Our part ends at the introduction.

There is no cost to your family at any step, and no pressure to choose a home.

From the mainland

Moving a parent to Hawaiʻi Island

The island has two main airports, Kona and Hilo. Pick the home first, then the airport closest to it.

Many families connect through Honolulu. Plan for the drive from the airport to the home.

You can start with us by phone or email while you are still on the continent. After we introduce you, you set up visits with the home directly, and someone from the family still meets the home in person before move-in.

Where this list comes from

These homes come from public records of the Hawaii Department of Health, Office of Health Care Assurance (OHCA). The full list of licensed ARCH, expanded ARCH, assisted living, and community care foster family homes comes from the OHCA facilities roster that the State publishes as open data. We check it every day and update this list when it changes.

The monthly ARCH vacancy report only covers homes that reported to the State that month, and openings change quickly. We do not post openings. We can ask a home about openings when we introduce you.

Hale Kōkua does not own, run, or license these homes. Foster family homes are private family homes, so we list them by town and license number only, never by the caregiver's name. Confirm any license with the State Licensing Section at (808) 692-7400. Last checked October 22, 2026.
