Memory care in Hawaii

Many families search for memory care when a parent has dementia, Alzheimer's, or other memory loss.

Hawaii does not have a license called memory care. Families usually look at licensed ARCH homes, expanded ARCH homes, or assisted living facilities that can care for memory loss.

Also called: dementia care, Alzheimer's care, care for memory loss.

What it is

What matters is whether a home can safely care for your person's memory loss, and whether its license allows the level of care the doctor describes.

Some homes care well for memory loss and night wandering. Others are not set up for it. The license name alone does not tell you.

Read the State rules in our licensing guide

Who it fits

  • If your person needs help with the day and some supervision, an ARCH or assisted living facility may fit.
  • If the doctor describes nursing-home level care, look at an expanded ARCH.

Paying for it

Most families pay privately or with long-term care insurance. Medicare does not pay the monthly rate.

If Medicaid is part of the plan, a community care foster family home may be the path. The State decides eligibility.
